| DUTCH ROBOT GAMES ( APRIL 26th & 27th 2003)
| |
The first cross-channel event for Roaming Robots, held in the Darling Expo Centre of Rijswijk,
( pronounced "Rye-sh-vack" ) - a small town in the Haag, Holland had been eagerly
anticipated. Most of the logistical problems of preparing the venue,
transporting the RR Arena and the RR Team had been overcome in collaboration with our
Dutch Hosts, so we were in no doubt that we were in for a most enjoyable weekend of robot fighting.
The Dutch Robot Games Foundation had worked very hard to provide everything needed for the event -
a great sound system, tiered audience seating, a well equipped repair/ workshop, a programmed and manually controlled
lighting rig, large screen tv and recording from 3 cameras and a a huge array of computers.
Lots of food and drink were also available throughout the day and after the days robotting
a few parties were arranged.
In case of a serious fire, they had also provided a remote controlled robot fire appliance
called "Blusbot" !!!!
In addition to the Dutch heavyweight robots, there were also robots from Belgium, Germany, Switzerland,
Denmark, Finland and a brave contingent of UK roboteers and robots had braved the perils
of the channel and the customs ("Any weapons, Sir ??". "Just the axes, spinning blades,
rams and spikes !!"."[big sigh] Oh dear, carry on Sir !!" )
Unfortunately, the Featherweight robot category is not well subscribed to by the
Mainland European Roboteers, so all the featherweight battles were between the British,
however, after the great demonstrations and thrilling battles performed , there is no doubt
that this category will have many more participants in the future.
All action in the heavyweight battles contributed to the final eliminator for the 2003
Dutch Robot Games Trophy (currently held by Bigger Brother in 2002 ) so all the action
was keen and enthusiastic.
Each Battle had an independant judge or judges, so that where there was no obvious winner, a fair result could be reached.
Points were awarded as follows :-
WINNER ............10 POINTS
RUNNER-UP ..........5 POINTS
THIRD PLACE.........1 POINT
(In the event of tied places, the corresponding place points were summed and halved)

There had been no dangerous occurrences and only one potentially unsafe incident, so , overall, it had been an extremely successful event.
After a few photographs and a few "thank you " speeches, it was time to think about disassembling the arena .
The Roaming Robots Team were extremely grateful for all the assistance they had
received from the Dutch organisers and most pleased to get first hand knowledge of the
enthusiasm and technological advances made by all the International Robot Teams.
Lots of new friendships were made and each International Robot Team (or individuals ) has a standing invitation to visit any of the UK Events ....before our return to the Nederlands in 2004 !!
Here are some images of the event :-

A Message from John :-
"We always liked the sound of an international event, not just for the fun of meeting
new roboteers and their robots, but for the challenge of getting all the kit & staff
over the Channel and having another of our great events.....but everything turned
out to be twice as good as we'd dared to hope.
Our hosts, André Boxebeld and the Dutch Robot Games Foundation, had worked extremely hard to provide us
with everything we needed and I can't thank them enough ....cheers guys, it was superb !!
There are few too many people to thank individually so to the organisers,
the special effects guys, the administrators, the tv guys, the commentators, the guest judges and the caterers, please accept our heartfelt thanks.
Every battle was hard fought and "full on" and it was a pleasure to see the audience having so much enjoyment.
We were pleased to see how well the foreign robots performed, there have been some real advancements and they are now a force to be reckoned with.
It was also great to see the contingent of British Roboteers ...as far as I know
they all had a great time and came sooooooooooo close to taking the Dutch trophy back to England!!
And of course, special congratulations to the Edgehog Team and Mike Lambert.
We hope to have another international event planned for next year (maybe two !!) so keep your passports handy.
